Summer School (Rising 9th Grade)

Below are some summer school options available to rising 9th grade students (current 8th). Deadline to register is May 30 at 4:00pm through GMS Counseling Office.

NOTE: This is separate from students being required to come to summer school because they failed a required course in 8th grade (you will receive separate communication from your child’s teacher regarding the anticipated failure and from me with summer school info).

 

NEW COURSES:

  • In-Person (Health/PE 9 only) https://www.rcps.us/departments/summerschool
    • The PE component of this course will be offered at NHS, June 9-25, Monday–Friday, from 8:00 am–4:00 pm. The health component will be completed online with course work provided via Canvas. Students may begin work on the health content June 3 and the course will end on July 1. 
    • The cost of the course is $400.
    • Registration forms can be picked up in GMS Counseling Office and must be returned to the Counseling Office with payment (if paid online, just note that and we can verify).
    • Register by May 30, 2025 at 4:00pm (Registration does not open until May 12)
    • Please see below for the online-only option for Summer Health/PE 9 (RCPS Online Academy)

 

  • RCPS Online Academy – all virtual – https://www.rcps.us/academy/rcpsonline-academy/rcpsonline-summer-academy
    • Courses available to rising 9th grade students: Health/PE 9, English 9, Adv English 9, World Geography, World History 1, Adv World History 1, Algebra 1, Adv Algebra 1, Geometry, Adv Geometry, Earth Science, Adv Earth Science. See all classes on their website (linked above).
    • Courses will run June 5th through July 17th. The registration deadline is May 30th by 4:00pm.
    • The cost of the course is $400.
    • Registration forms can be picked up in GMS Counseling Office and must be returned to the Counseling Office with payment (if paid online, just note that and we can verify).
    • Register by May 30, 2025 at 4:00pm (registration is now open, form is attached)
    • Students enrolled in Summer Academy courses will be provided a laptop upon request (see Mr. Sparks)
    • NOTE:  This is an online-only program.  Students must have reliable internet access.
    • ALL COURSES REQUIRE A FACE-TO-FACE EXAM or SOL. These will take place July 15, 16, and 17th at a location to be determined. If your child cannot attend a face-to-face exam or SOL test, do not enroll them for any Academy course.

 

REPEAT COURSES:

  • World Languages REPEAT ONLY – Face-to-face at NHS 
    • Repeat classes are $200 each.
    • Registration forms can be picked up in GMS Counseling Office and must be returned to the Counseling Office with payment (if paid online, just note that and we can verify).
    • Register by May 30, 2025 at 4:00pm (Registration does not open until May 12)
  • Algebra 1 or Geometry – Face-to-face at NHS (not advanced, but can replace an Advanced course)
    • Face-to-face summer school at NHS June 9-July 8 M-F (8:00-11:45 or 12:15-4:00 depending on session)
    • Repeat class are $200 each.
    • Registration forms can be picked up in GMS Counseling Office and must be returned to the Counseling Office with payment (if paid online, just note that and we can verify).
    • Register by May 30, 2025 at 4:00pm (Registration does not open until May 12)
    • Transportation provided from each elementary school.

  • Adv Algebra 1, Adv Geometry – RCPS Online Academy

Forms for any program can be found in the GMS Counseling Office. Students can sign up for RCPS Online Academy or face-to-face courses now through May 28 at 4:00pm. Payment can be made by check or cash to our Bookkeeper (Mrs. Driver) or through online payment. Students will not be signed up until full payment is made.
